Description:
Have you ever attended a conference program and, after the first five minutes, wished that you were sitting closer to the exit? Or felt trapped for the entire 60 minutes as the panel of presenters asked you to hold questions until the end?  Do you feel frustrated by conference presentations that don’t deliver on what was promised?

During your career, and through your involvement in library-related associations, you may be giving presentations about the innovative things that you and your library are doing.  During these presentations, you want to engage your audience, as well as represent yourself and your library in the best possible way.

The secret that effective presenters know is how to make their presentations audience-focused. They know how to transform their presentations (individual or as part of a panel, in-person or online) from a recitation of things their libraries did to more dynamic conversations with the audience about lessons learned.  In audience-focused presentations, you can see the shift from “how my library did it” to “how your library can do it.”

As a result of this webinar, you will be able to:
• Learn from what presenters do that is or is not effective for you when you are the audience.
• Develop your own presentations with the perceived needs of the audience as the focus…and check your perceptions.
• Write learning outcomes appropriate to the audience, topic, and time allocated.
• Utilize some simple techniques during the presentation to keep it audience-focused.

During the webinar, Mary Ross will explain and demonstrate techniques for audience-focused presentations. These techniques can be used in face-to-face as well as online presentations. Audience-focused presentations are all about anticipating the WIIFM of your audience—the “what’s in it for me?” that they are asking as your presentation begins. The techniques can be used in community presentations (to the chamber of commerce, PTSA, or local service organization) as well as conference presentations.

Mary Ross has given in-person presentations, and facilitated panel discussions, at national, regional, and state conferences, including ALA, PLA, ASIS&T, PNLA, WLA, NJLA, AzLA, and Virtual Reference Desk conferences. She has developed online courses and webinars for Infopeople, WebJunction, and LibraryU. She currently works for Infopeople as the instructional designer for all online courses.

This 75-minute interactive webinar will be presented using Elluminate, WLA’s platform for online meetings and learning.
