Graduate Study Scholarships
The Washington Library Association awards an annual scholarship(s) to WLA member attending any accredited library school who will have completed at least 12 credits by April 1, 2010. We award up to $6,000 each year. Applicants are judged based on demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession; experience in community activities, volunteering, professional associations, or work involving libraries; academic achievement. The applications process opens on November 1 and closes on December 31. Interviews will be held at the University of Washington on February 19 (in person interviews preferred). The winner(s) receive a conference grant and will be honored at the annual WLA Conference.
Scholarship Criteria
- A record of achievement which may include: Demonstrated potential for leadership in the profession; experience in community activities, volunteering, professional associations, or work involving libraries; academic achievement.
- Membership in the Washington Library Association.
- Washington State residency or employment in a Washington library upon graduation.
- Satisfactory completion of at least 12 credits by April 1, 2008 in an ALA accredited program leading to the Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
- Scholarship tuition payments will continue as long as satisfactory progress is being made toward graduation within five (5) years of the first payment, or until the total amount of the grant has been awarded, whichever is first.
- The awardee is willing to sign a contract delineating the terms of the award, agreeing to actively participate in WLA for at least two years. The grant is awarded with the expectation that the recipient will make every effort to seek employment in a Washington State library following graduation.
Timeline
- November 1 – Announcement Posted
- December 31 at 5pm - Deadline for Applications
- February 19 – Top Candidates Interviews (in person interviews highly preferred)
- August 11-13, 2010 – Scholarship Awarded at the joint 2010 WLA/PNLA Conference in Victoria, BC
Note: Apply separately for 2010 WLA Conference Grants; scholarship applicants are not automatically entered into that pool.

- Names and telephone numbers of three (3) references
Please note that WLA is a 501(c)(4). Contributions to 501(c)(4) organizations generally are not deductible as charitable donations, but they may be deductible as a business expense.
