JOURNEYS
OF DISCOVERY
CONFERENCE
HIGHLIGHTS
- The
2003 Washignton Library Association Annual
Conference commences Wednesday, April 9 with
five pre-conference at the Yakima Convention
Center and WestCoast Hotel Yakima Center. The
pre-conferences and presenters will
be:
- Think
Like a Boss: Getting Decision Makers to Say Yes;
Pat Wagner (a favorite presenter at WLA and WALE
conferences, returns to present both the
pre-conference and a conference program),
Bienvenido to the Library!
- On
Thursday, April 10, the annual conference
officially convenes to explore the theme
"Journeys of Discovery." The conference
committee, co-chaired by Lynne Zeiher and Kristy
Coomes, promises that you will make many
discovereis during conference sessions--both
professional and personal, benefiting you and
your library.
- Janaki
Severy, President of Management Dynamics will
keynote the conference for attendees. This
promises to be an exciting, enlightening and
energizing interactive presentation.
- Wally
Amos will be our speaker at the WLA President's
Banquet. Mr. Amos may be best known as "Famous
Amos" but his contributions to education,
libraries and communities reach far beyond the
gourmet chocolate chip cookie
business.
- Author
Amy Goldman Koss will be a highlight of the
conference, speaking at the CAYAS breakfast. She
is the author of eleven books for children and
youth. Koss's sense of the contemporary world of
teenagers and its particular problems makes her
books real, relevant and revelatory. She is the
winner of the John Burroughs List Award for
outstanding nature books and other special
honors.
- Ruth
Kirk will be the featured speaker at the WLFTA
Breakfast on Saturday morning.
- Walt
Crawford is scheduled to speak on copyright. His
topic is Copyright Out of Whack, Why Should You
Care. Crawford, the author of Future Libraries:
Dreams, Madness & Reality, is also a regular
columnist for American Libraries, Online, and is
the eContent, host of the 'Blog Cites &
Insights: Crawford at Large. Another highlight
will be Ruth Kirk, who will be the speaking on
Beyond the Pages: Books and Writing with Ruth
Kirk, at the WLFTA breakfast. Kirk is the author
of many award-winning books on natural history,
and her articles have appeared in several
popular magazines.
- Conference
sessions, which are divided into seven tracks
(Serving Children & Young adults, Management
& Training, Reference Services, Trustees
& Friends, Intellectual Freedom, Community
Connections, and Collection Development), will
include many exciting programs and
pre-conferences challenging us with the impacts
of new technology, the future of reference (is
the desk dead?) building library success, banned
books, the Internet impact, levy advice, serving
children, and more.
- A
silent auction, to benefit the Beverly Cleary
endowed chair at the University of Washington
Information School, will be held during the
President's Reception, which will have us all on
stage at the historic Capitol
Theatre!
- There
will be planned opportunities to explore Yakima
wineries, to peek behind the scenes at the
Yakima Historical Museum, to dine at the Yakama
Nation Cultural Center, as well as explore the
glories of spring in Cowiche Canyon guided by a
local expert.
- Be
sure to mark your calendar. You won't want to
miss journeying to Yakima and discovering what
WLA has in store for you in April 2003!
