ALKI
ALKI is one of three official publications of the Washington Library Association. It provides WLA members in depth information about library issues and concerns, exposure to library research, and an opportunity for new writers to publish articles in a library journal.
Summary
The ALKI Editor is responsible for providing a balanced mixture of relevant and thoughtful articles and features on the problems, responsibilities and concerns of all library personnel. The journal should be a leader in the field by raising the consciousness of the profession which it serves. ALKI should be an aggressive, responsive and inspirational voice reflecting WLA to a diverse library community.
Responsibilities
- Working effectively with the ALKI Editorial Committee, Executive Board, Public Relations Committee, Association Coordinator, authors, columnists and library community.
- Establishing content of ALKI, in conjunction with Editorial Committee.
- Identifying trends and determining trends of interest and concern to membership.
- Communicating with and soliciting input from the ALKI Editorial Committee regarding editorial policy, business, issue themes, content and procedure items.
- Setting issue themes, establishing tone, substance and personality to ALKI in conjunction with Editorial Committee. Insuring that the journal complies with the Publication Guidelines adopted by the WLA Board.
- Developing, reviewing and implementing editorial policy established by Committee
- Producing the journal, including preparation of copy for typesetting, proofreading, ordering of layouts and graphics, working with printer determining number of journals to be printed, and preparing the journal for mailing.
- Responsible for communications related to ALKI.
- Coordinating advertising and business aspects of ALKI, including soliciting and placing advertising and insuring information is given to Association Coordinator for preparing and distributing invoices.
- Submitting vouchers and coordinating fiscal matters with the Association Treasurer
- Planning a budget in accord with Fiscal Policy and submitting it to Association Treasurer May 1 of each year.
- Attending and reporting on ALKI at Association Executive Board meetings.
- Attending WLA Annual Conference.
- Working with the Association Coordinator to maintain subscriber lists and mailing labels.
Requirements
The ALKI Editor must be a dynamic, self-motivated individual with experience and skills in the publication of newsletters, journals, or comparable publications. The editor must have the ability to delegate, strong organizational skills, the ability to set and meet deadlines and scheduling flexibility to allow attendance at necessary meetings. The editor also must have access to a computer, appropriate software and modem.
Compensation
An annual stipend of $1,000 (1/3 paid after each issue) and necessary travel expenses.
Reporting responsibilities
The ALKI Editor is considered an employee of the Association, and as such, serves at the pleasure of the WLA President with concurrence of the WLA Executive Board. Ongoing direction is provided by the ALKI Editorial Committee Chair with over site by the Coordinator of Communications. Performance evaluations are provided by the President with input from the ALKI Editorial Committee Chair and the Coordinator of Communications.
