Promoting library services, advocacy and continuing education for the people of Washington State.
WLA Fact Sheet:

Friends of the Library [1997]

Public Library funding, like that of other government services, is limited. Because of tax constraints, large increases in book and magazine prices, and the burgeoning cost of computer technology, many libraries are struggling to provide the materials and services that their community expects. Friends of the Library attempt to fill some of the gaps.

Friends of the Library are community-based non-profit groups of citizens who promote, encourage and enhance the work of their local libraries. In Washington State, over 150 Friends of the Library Groups raise over $350,000 annually to supplement the funding of local libraries, a large portion of it through community activities. Their members also volunteer thousands of hours of their time to libraries.

FRIENDS HELP LIBRARIES WITH SPECIAL PROJECTS BY:

  • Sponsoring programs for children and adults.
  • Raising funds to support building or expansion projects.
